Gentle and Quiet Spirit: What Does it Mean?

How do we woman/men of God have a gentle and quiet spirit? According to the bible, this characteristic is very important while we as Christ followers move through ministering to the world. This is a personality type of Jesus and we all need to walk in it. It pleases God for us to walk in his nature in his character and in his countenance. It is imperative that we put off what is our worldly personality type and attributes and put on Gods. 1 Peter 3-4, whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.  Being of a gentle quiet spirit is a demand from God, putting off are old characteristics and wearing Gods like amour.

In the world today we have graphs and charts describing our personality types and certain attributes that describe us. Examples of these personality types is introvert, extravert, outgoing, shy, loud and bubbly, overly sensitive, not a people person, and many more that characterize different kinds of people in the world today. While these may be seemingly true for some people, this is not the personality type of Jesus that he tells us to exude. In Colossians 3 12-14, we are told put on therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved bowels of mercies kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering for bearing one another and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any even as Christ forgave you so also do ye, and above all these things put on charity which is the bond of perfectness.  How do we put on this character, simple by loving God and him being first in your life. Taking off what you once knew as your “personality” and replacing it with God's word. God says we should be humble and meek walking and abounding in love. If your “personality” is opposite to God's nature, we have to separate ourselves from that character and wear Gods. These are attributes given by the world not God, and can ultimately hinder the move of God on us.

When we walk, it should not be boastful, proud or loud. When we walk it should display the countenance and demeanor of God. When we speak our diction should display that we have been with God. When we give, our giving should be with a heart of generosity that only comes from God. When we listen, it should be to hear, and to gain understanding to bring forth a proper response that is inspired by God only. For the bible says we should be quick to listen and slow to speak. This is a display of having a gentle quiet spirit, having the Beatitudes in Matthew 5: 5-9 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.  If your personality is always offending others, you need to change it. We as believers should not walk and offend others with just our “real” or “blunt” personality. Our presence should not always offend and hurt people in the body of Christ nor the unbeliever. We need to walk in love, wisdom and truth.

In Titus 3 verse 2 it says, to speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. What is meekness? quiet, gentle, and easily imposed on; submissive. We should be submissive unto God at all times. When someone does you wrong or persecutes you. We should yield to God to direct our response and move with a gentle quiet spirit. For it is God the fills our mouth with the correct words to say in difficult times, not our personality type. For we ought to know when to speak and when to be quiet having the revelation and discernment of Christ. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. Sometimes we move to fast and speak things that does not edify God, ourselves nor the people around us. Don’t move with your own mind, but with the mind of God; putting on his perspective and his personality type. For Jesus says do not exalt yourselves in anything.

Mattew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Jesus is the perfect display of meekness, we ought to all learn what it means to wear his personality and protect ourselves from everything that is not God in this world.

For in the world there is no love, but only lovers of themselves and their desires wants and needs, 2 Timothy 3:2. 2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy.  We as Christ followers do not need to adopt anything that the world says about us. For we are children of God coming down from heaven as ambassadors for God. We live from Heaven to Earth, not Earth to Heaven. Everything about us needs to display God, in all our ways we are to acknowledge him.  A perfect example of having a gentle quiet spirit is Ester. She always moved with grace and displayed the character and countenance of God, even also in her speech. She was not quick to speak and come to her own opinion, but wise in every decision she made for her people and herself.
